How to cut food waste and save money

UK households are throwing away £12 billion worth of food and drink every year - for the average family, that's up to £50 a month.

According to WRAP (The Waste and Resources Action Programme) that's the equivalent of 8.3 million tonnes of food and less than one-fifth of that is really unavoidable - things like bones and banana skins.

Wasted food doesn't just affect our purses, it has a big impact on climate change too. Most of it ends up in landfill sites where it rots and releases methane, a damaging greenhouse gas. The food and drink we throw away is also a huge waste of energy, water and packaging used in its production, transportation and storage.
